I am a massive Queen fan, have been for many many years. I still haven’t forgiven Freddie Mercury for daring to die the day after my birthday though! So when my hubby presented me with tickets to go and see We Will Rock You, the Ben Elton musical in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, to say I was excited was a massive understatement. I know the show has been running for 11 years, but I’m not sure that it had been to Northern Ireland, if it had, then I didn’t know about it, so I jumped at the chance to go. Although he likes Queen too, my hubby definitely isn’t a fan of musicals, so I did feel a bit honoured that he was prepared to endure the torture to entertain me.
With the grandparents drafted in to babysit we headed to Belfast. As we pulled into the car park the heavens opened with an enormous downpour. As we were sitting in the car waiting for the rain to pass, someone tapped on my hubby’s window. It turned out to be a good friend of his. He has a corporate hospitality suite for his business that he uses to entertain clients. He was having a few people join him and he asked us to come too. Happy days, the show I wanted to see, but getting the chance to see it from the suites with food and drink – how could we refuse ha!
We were taken in via the VIP entrance and went up in the lift to the suite. I’ve never been inside one and I have to say, they are fab, very spacious, comfortable, with huge drinks fridge, big sofas and then excellent private seats for the show. The suites come with staff, who just kept filling my glass up all night.
The show began promptly at 8pm and the whole thing was utterly brilliant. The storyline was current and fun, the light show amazing. Some of the jokes were very funny and the singing was fabulous. The band were phenomenal and got a huge standing ovation at the end. It was just one amazing Queen song after another. One huge sing-a-long after another. Possibly my only objection was the changing of the words to Radio GaGa.
The show ran for almost 3 hours, with a short interval, but I could quite happily have stayed longer. Even my non stage musical loving hubby enjoyed himself and surprised himself that he did. The grand finale was of course Bohemian Rhapsody and it just raised the roof, the crowd went wild. The whole thing was a fabulous night out and I would urge any Queen fan to go and see it. You do have to go with an open mind and remind yourself that you won’t hear Freddie singing. There were a few times when a song started and I was waiting for that distinctive voice, which of course doesn’t come. An amazingly fun night out though and I am so glad that we went.
**Disclaimer, I have not been paid or compensated in any way for this post, this was our night out, my hubby bought our tickets. The corporate hospitality we received was purely coincidental, provided by a friend, as a friend and not in any way to promote or endorse his business**
